Now if you’ve been here a while you no doubt know that the cornerstone of our innovative formulations here at Proaora is Astaxanthin which has been crowned as Mother Nature's most powerful antioxidant and with good reason. It is the foundation of our targeted and scientifically proven products that transform our customer's skin, delivering immediate and long-term results at an accessible price. So, it’s safe to say that we highly recommend the stuff! Head to our other blog posts to see the reviews, they really do speak for themselves.
As a pioneering skincare company creating innovative products, it seems only natural that Astaxanthin was discovered by our wonderful co-founder Aleksandra Ptak back in 2016. Her extensive research led her to the discovery of Astaxanthin and her passion to create skincare based on this formulation was born. After 18months of research, development, and safety and stability testing the formula was finally ready and included three core ingredients Vitamin C, Astaxanthin, and Hyaluronic Acid.
BUT WHAT IS IT EXACTLY?
Pronounced ‘as-ta-zan-thin’ (you’re welcome), Astaxanthin’s primary natural source, Haematococcus pluvialis, is even more of a mouthful. The microalgae that produce it to provide a protective antioxidant shield in response to light or other environmental stressors. Classified as a carotenoid, Astaxanthin is, therefore, a naturally derived ingredient predominantly present in marine life in red trout, krill, shrimp, crustaceans, and even gives flamingos and salmon their bright red hue. Intrigued yet?
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Research has found that this naturally powerful ingredient is clinically proven to increase skin moisture, moisture retention, elasticity, as well as promote skin smoothness and decreasing fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps to prevent UV and free radical damage to aid in the prevention of new signs of aging being formed with continued use.
The fact that it protects against UV rays is a two-fold benefit as sun damage causes DNA damage and so Astaxanthin protects against both. It is reported to improve the DNA repair capacity of cells exposed to UV radiation, in layman’s terms, it may slow the growth of skin cancer cells which is a big thumbs up in our books.
The antioxidant power of Astaxanthin is clinically proven to be 60 times more powerful than Vitamin C and more potent than Vitamin E, ensuring that the skin receives an exceptionally high level of protection against the prematurely aging damage of environmental aggressors. It protects the skin, throughout the dermal layers and improves skin's elasticity by aiding healthy skin cell function.
Don't let these huge skincare accolades fool you, Astaxanthin is ideal for those with sensitive skin as it has anti-inflammatory properties aiding in skin redness, sensitivity, and naturally, inflammation.
HOW TO USE IT?
The Astaxanthin present in our serums and moisturisers can be used morning and night as directed on our product packaging. Ensure your skin is cleansed before use and if you have particularly sensitive skin, we recommend conducting a patch test 24 hours before use, as with all new skincare.
